SUBMISSION DUE DATE: October 15, 2014

SPECIAL ISSUE ON Applied Research in Immersive Environments for Learning
International Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments (IJVPLE)

Guest Editors: Adriana D’ Alba & Stephen Bronack, University of West Georgia. Greg Jones, University of North Texas.

INTRODUCTION:

An increasing number of educational institutions, corporations, media outlets and other private and public sector organizations continue to explore effective uses of emerging three-dimensional online and immersive learning environments — particularly, the virtual sense of presence utilizing this type of technology affords. Colleges and universities in particular, continue to explore the use of 3-D to deliver content by offering virtual meetings, trainings, and simulations, using highly immersive, collaborative, and game-like environments. However, significant challenges exist –including, but not limited to, the amount of training and money historically required to create and maintain effective virtual spaces for learning.
For several years, SecondLife dominated the arena of virtual worlds. In recent years, other platforms have emerged, increasing the numbers of institutions, teachers and educators who are creating and maintaining their own three-dimensional, immersive learning spaces.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:

This special issue explores the new opportunities for supporting learners that emerging tools, games, and apps available for the creation and maintenance of three dimensional online and immersive learning environments provide. By offering theoretical perspectives, practical guidelines, and showcasing examples from teachers, learners, leaders, and researchers, this special issue will advance successful strategies and thoughtful design for supporting individuals learning in virtual spaces.

This special issue also will serve as an opportunity to offer instructional strategies for the creation and support of immersive technologies such as virtual worlds, augmented reality, simulations, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games, among others. It aims to offer inspirations kindled and supported by current practices.

RECOMMENDED TOPICS:

Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following:
– Exploration of the affordances of different tools used to create three-dimensional online and immersive environments for learning;
– Case studies detailing opportunities or challenges related to the use of three-dimensional online and immersive environments for learning in formal and/or informal settings;
– Novel research methods used for the exploration of three-dimensional online and immersive environments;
– Transitioning from real to virtual learning environments;
– Virtual worlds and game based design;
– Open-source games and simulations for the classroom;
– Instructional design for learning in three-dimensional online environments;
– Instructional strategies for three-dimensional and immersive learning environments in the classroom;
– Open-source tools for creating educational games.
